| We are delighted to open our concert series with an ensemble which now includes as its cellist, Christopher Costanza, who grew up in Utica. Founded in Toronto in 1989, the SLSQ soon began winning prestigious international prizes; the list is too long for this space! Its highly acclaimed standard performance repertoire is augmented by a passionate commitment to the work of contemporary composers, especially that of Osvaldo Golijov, Christos Hatzis and Jonathan Berger. The SLSQ is Ensemble-in-Residence at Stanford University. It records exclusively for EMI Classics; the ensemble’s latest CD, the Shostakovich String Quartets, Nos. 3, 7 and 8, was released in 2006 to rave reviews. | A most successful concert career began for the guest of our guests with a rush of prizes. Todd Palmer made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall as a winner of the 1987 Artists International Competition and went on to win, in 1988, the Grand Prize in the Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition in Houston (the first wind player to win this prestigious competition!). Recitals as a result of winning the 1990 Young Concert Artists International Auditions were enthusiastically received. His latest CD, Yiddishbuk, on EMI, was a top-ten classical disc of 2002. “Sensationally virtuosic and soulful” has been the review (Boston Globe) of our guest’s performance in “The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind” (Golijov) which will run through 2009; Todd Palmer travels with five instruments called for in the score. |
